Who organizes this?

SOMA Kindness provides community connections and volunteer support for new and ongoing initiatives in South Orange, Maplewood (SOMA) NJ and surrounding areas.

Our goal is to encourage volunteering and friendly support by providing a free platform to promote and receive opportunities in SOMA and surrounding areas.

We started as a grassroots effort in 2020, filling immediate community needs during the pandemic. In 2022, Marigold LifeWorks founder and South Mountain YMCA Board Chair Dr. Christel Hyden relaunched the project using the technology and lessons learned connecting neighbors to helpers at Marigold, with a focus on disseminating family friendly and other inclusive ways to contribute or receive help. In 2025, South Mountain YMCA became our official community partner for outreach and engagement.

This project is inspired by and dedicated to the neighbors who have taught us the value of asking for and giving help.
